Here’s a great video I found some time ago of some Olympic Lifters doing some REAL weightlifting…..none of that wimpy, useless stuff you’ll see at Bally’s or 24Hr.
Don’t just sit there
Added On: 02.14.11
CrossFitters everywhere are well versed in the ideology behind a “Paleo” diet… by eating the foods we were eating 10,000 years ago, prior to the agricultural revolution, we are eating foods that we were genetically predisposed for. Have you ever thought about it in relation sitting down in a chair? Think about it… up to 200 years ago, how much time each day did a person spend sitting down? Certainly not as much as we do today – a staggering average of 8.9 hrs/day. Do you think that humans evolved to sit? How much time did our caveman ancestors spend sitting as compared to walking or squatting? Think about the impact that sitting has on the physiology of the human body and the difference it makes on the health and conditioning of the stabilizing muscles of your torso and the structure of your spine.
If you are experiencing occasional, mild, chronic, or more severe back pain, it may have a lot to do with your daily sitting habits. According to Your Office Chair is Killing You from Business Week, it may even have an impact on your body fat percentage.
One more week to go on the Paleo Challenge!
Added On: 02.12.11
Everyone has done so well on the Paleo Challenge these last 5 weeks. We have some individuals who have lost more than 20 lbs so far. So let’s stay strong on this last week of our 6 week Paleo Challenge.
PS> I have posted some information in regards to our Paleo Challenge after party on the board at Walnut CrossFit. I will also post more info here on the website this upcoming week.
What’s the Purpose?

Why do we ask you to do the seemingly crazy things that we do? Why do we want you to be able to clean and jerk, deadlift, kip, swing a kettlebell or do double unders? I can assure you it’s not so that you have a great clean, a big deadlift or 100 consecutive double unders. Those things are all great – but they are great because they train you for your daily challenges and are indicators of how powerful, strong and coordinated you are in life! I’m not ultimately interested in whether or not you want to be a great lifter. I’m interested in you living the strongest, most powerful, vibrant, exciting life you can possibly imagine. We could be doing anything, it just so happens that these particular movements do the trick. Work it out in here so you are free to take on anything you want out there!
Doing the Common, Uncommonly Well
Added On: 02.09.11
Have you heard this before? It’s the definition CrossFitters use for the word “virtuosity”. And how does it apply to CrossFit training? Master the fundamentals. And what does it take for mastery… 10,000 hours? For most of us, that’s simply not possible… but what is?
Take the very basic CrossFit movements (i.e. squat, deadlift, pull-up, push up, handstand, box jump, row erg, etc) and study them… what does it take to do each effortlessly? What exactly should your body be doing to perform these movements with perfection? Where should your weight be distributed? What about your arm position, torso angle, breath, gaze, stance, grip, focus, preparation, timing, pelvic tilt, hollow or arched, depth, etc? Figure this out for each movement, and then practice, practice, practice… so that ultimately your body just does it, without thought, without mental effort, without the need to focus on various components… leaving you free to simply move.
This is virtuosity – doing the common, uncommonly well. Beauty… Grace… Ease… Effortlessness… Joy… and when done in the midst of a CrossFit workout, while under the pressure of the stopwatch – true mastery.
Andrew Harada is January’s Athlete of the Month
Added On: 02.08.11
Whether you train in the mornings or in the evenings, you’ve probably run into Andrew. This is because Andrew generally trains twice a day. Yes, you heard right…..Andrew is insane enough to do two WODs in one day…..4-5 days a week. But that is not why he is the athlete of the month. He is being given this title because of the huge improvements he has made in such a short time. He has seen new PRs(Personal Records) on his 1 mile run, Cindy, Elizabeth, and Deadlift. All within the last 45 days. So when you see Andrew, give him a big Walnut CrossFit high five. Way to go Andrew!

So let’s enjoy the festivities and the food(IN MODERATION OF COURSE) and get back to our Paleo lifestyle after the big game.
