I am ????????

Added On: 04.30.11

Justin flying through the air

I am strong. I am powerful. I have stamina. I am fast like the wind. I can go for hours. I am agile like a cat. I have great balance. I am coordinated. I am flexible.

Can you make each of these statements about yourself with a straight face? Try it. If any part of you is saying, “No… you’re really not…”, then you’ve got your target. Now, what are you doing EVERY DAY to address it?

Women of Walnut CrossFit

Added On: 04.29.11

Darlene and Erica at the old facility

It is my experience that it takes a unique kind of woman to pursue and stick with CrossFit. It has nothing to do with the physical skills or athletic aptitude she may or may not have, but rather, it has to do with her tenacity and her desire for learning and growth. The women here at Walnut CrossFit get what it means to invest in themselves for the long-haul, both physically and mentally. It doesn’t mean they don’t have ups and downs, it doesn’t mean that they don’t still struggle with fitting fitness into work, relationships and family, but they keep working and keep learning. I find it a daily inspiration.

Hero WOD Reminder

Added On: 04.27.11

Raul on the Back Squat

Just a friendly reminder that this Saturday at 9am, we will be doing our monthly HERO WOD. These WODs are exceptionally hard and may go over the 1 hour time frame we usually adhere to. The 8am class will NOT be a Hero WOD. Last month we had a great turn out and it appears that this Saturdays will be the same.

Want some more Noggin

Garrett knocking out some heavy Deadlifts!

Scientists for years have been exploring the mind-body connection, especially when it comes to exercise and it’s impact on your brain, and the ultimate question, can exercise really make you smarter?

Well in studying this, they have discovered a brain protein called, believe it or not, “Noggin.” When you exercise, more Noggin shows up… and the impact within your brain is significant. More Noggin means more brain stem cell activity… and when they’re more active, more responsive, they are actually dividing and differentiating into additional stem cells or baby neurons. In the brains of mice and rats, this led to their ability to breeze through mazes and other tests of rodent I.Q.

Fuzz

Added On: 04.22.11

So you don’t feel like taking the time to stretch? Not as much fun as the challenge of a good WOD? Well if you’re not regularly engaged in lengthening your muscles and tendons, you are probably building up “fuzz”. This fuzz (see video above) makes you stiffer, less capable of moving, reduces circulation, and inhibits muscle layers from moving smoothly across one another. So if you’re feeling and achey joint or muscle, wake up stiff, or are just plain tight, take five minutes each day and move, stretch… go beyond what is just comfortable… eliminate the fuzz! Thanks to SanFrancisco CrossFit for posting this on their site!

PS>YES, THAT’S A REAL DEAD BODY HE’S USING.

What’s your perspective?

Added On: 04.21.11

Say hello to one of our newest members MaryAnne.

Why do you train? There is a very good chance that if you’re reading this, you are NOT going to be competing in the CrossFit Games (considering that a measly 0.8% of the athletes that competed in sectionals actually made it to the games). So, if you’re not going to the Games, then really, why bother putting in all the effort? I mean CrossFit is H-A-R-D… ridiculously hard. And if you’re not competing at an elite level, then what’s the point?

For me, the point is to see what I’m made of. A long time ago, I fell in love with the idea of trying to figure that out…

Here’s the thing… I definitely don’t love training. I can just as easily sit around, watch movies, surf the net and watch TV for weeks at a time, as I can go to the gym. So the way I look at it, is that every time I work out, I “get the opportunity” to see just what I’m capable of doing. Strange perspective, huh? “Get the opportunity”… to put myself through agonizing hell, torture, pain, discomfort. “Get the opportunity”… to suffer, sweat, bleed, puke, agonize. “Get the opportunity”… to persevere, find a way, to show up in spite of the fear, to dig deeper than I thought I was capable, to finish, to really see what I’m made of! Some of you get the opportunity to work out with friends or family.

That’s my perspective that allows me to keep coming back and loving the process. What’s yours?

This first video is an interview by ABC News, with Dr. Robert H. Lustig MD.  In this interview he shares how bad sugar is for you. Not just High Fructose Corn Syrup, but all sugars. He goes as far as calling sugar a poison.

In this video…. excuse my language….HE BACKS HIS SH!T UP. It’s a ninety minute video in where Dr. Lustig goes into specific detail on how all sugars are bad for you. This video has become very popular on YouTube, hitting nearly a million views. Please make some time to view both of these videos.
