So why is it that so many CrossFitters and other athletes take protein shakes? Well, protein is used for the production of muscles. Proteins are also used to manufacture hormones, enzymes, cellular messengers, nucleic acids, and immune-system components. Without adequate protein, our bodies can’t put together the structures that make up every cell, tissue, and organ, nor can it generate the biochemical substances needed for cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, growth, and healing. Without an adequate amount of protein our muscles wouldn€™t heal up as quickly and could therefore lead to overtraining your muscle which could lead to injury.
Also, after a workout is one of the best time to get protein into the body so that the protein can be delivered to your muscles, to begin healing the €?”micro tears€ (very small tears in the muscle tissue, caused by intense contraction of the muscle during workout) in the muscle.
Because solid food takes more time to digest and to break down the protein and send it to the muscles, it can be best to take a protein shake immediately following a workout, since protein shakes only take about 30 minutes to reach the muscle after ingestion. Definitely, we can see the advantage to taking a protein shake in this instance.
I RECOMMEND PROGENEX. Now you guys get 10% off because you train at this CrossFit facility. The link for your 10% off is on the lower left hand corner of the website. I recommend you have your shake already made when you come to class, put it in our refrigerator and consume it right after the WOD(workout of the day)

CrossFit has given Karl more time to do more important things....
Karl MacPhee was a competitive triathlete from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada). He trained in the typical high volume manner common to long distance events. It worked, to a point, and was faster. One of the great costs, though, was the amount of time he spent training, and how that cut into his family and social lives. After he discovered CrossFit, that all changed:
Within the first six months of training with the CrossFit principles, I gained about 15 pounds and was back to a respectable 170 pounds. Now, I should also mention that I quit swimming altogether, stopped the two weekly cycling sessions with my club, and only ran to work, rather than running on the weekend. So my cardio or LSD training consisted of cycling to work 3-4 times per week, and running to work once a week.
To his surprise, he got even faster.
This marked the first time that I qualified for the Worlds, and was also my fastest time on this course. One month later, in Kelowna, BC for one more pre-Worlds race, I improved my time and overall standings with a PR of 2:16. Adding to the triumph was the fact that I was able to celebrate it better; instead of my normal post-race headaches and lethargy, my post-race recovery was so good that I actually enjoyed the remainder of the day.
And, he has epilepsy.
The CrossFit community is full of people just like me, who have had to overcome a disability, or disease, or illness, as well as the line-up of people who get in the way. Just as we see from the CrossFit Journal articles featuring Kyle Maynard, who was born a congenital amputee and overcame his situation to compete at the State level in wrestling, I don’t feel as though I have a disease or disability; I have a card that has been dealt to me, and I must play it. The CrossFit community is a place of like-minded people who have all played their own cards, and in doing so have been creating a stronger world, one person at a time.
I’m in love with Tricia……what I mean is…I’m in love with the way she attacks her WODs(workout of the day) There is a glisten in Tricia’s eye every time she works out. As a coach, I love to see this. Some of you might ask, “why is there a glisten in her eye”? Don’t she realize these workouts are tough and sometimes make you puke? Why does she get so excited on PR(personal record) days, when many others moan and groan. Its because I have presented a challenge to her….and she loves that. She has that glisten in her eye because I have just put a very hard task in front of her and because I am asking her to put her heart and soul on the line. She thrives on that!
One of the things that I noticed during the last six months as visitors came in and out of town is just how much a CrossFit gym can be an oasis. I definitely see it when people come from other parts of the country or even other parts of the world. Sometimes locating the CrossFit affiliate is the first thing they do. It was really something to watch people who were here for such a short time become real members of our community, instantly accepted as a friend, someone trusted and understood. There is something familiar and comforting about finding your people out in the world.
I also see it with our members who are here every day. It’s great to see people come into the box and slip out of their daily grind and “relax” for an hour – sometimes longer. To feel comfortable enough to grunt and groan, and lie down next to each other on the floor. To let it all go and swap war stories when it is all over. I know I feel it when I’m done with a workout – that sense of not wanting to leave, to hang out a little longer. A nice, sweaty, safe home away from home.
Just a reminder, one more week until the Paleo Challenge starts. Let me know if you will be participating. Send me a text, e-mail or phone call to let me know if you will be participating. The $40 entry fee is due now.
Fitness doesn’t just have to be about training hard in the gym. In fact, one of the most important parts of fitness is to get out there and do stuff… fun stuff… adventurous stuff… play games, sports, be active. After all, what’s the point of all the hard work if you’re not going out and using it in the rest of your life!

When I first became involved with CrossFit, it reminded me right away of my experience in martial arts. The most attractive similarity between martial arts and CrossFit had nothing to do with anything physical. What struck me was the sense of community and respect that was present. In martial arts, I always felt I was part of something bigger, that beyond what I was learning and the strength I was gaining, there was a mental aspect and a community aspect that I revered, an unspoken set of rules to behave by that didn’t need to be spoken because it was just a natural way to behave in a place you admired. I knew to defer to brown and black belts, and I also knew that they would give me knowledge and tips in return. I stayed after to help, not because I had to, but because it was how we said thank you to our instructor.
While not formalized in Walnut CrossFit, I see it all the time in class — veteran students jump in to help new students, students take the broom out of my hands after class, classmates cheer until the last student finishes. I think you all know this, but that doesn’t happen at 24 Hour Fitness or Bally’s. When you truly feel you’re getting something out of something you’re a part of, it’s impossible to not want to give back in some way. It becomes a very un-vicious cycle that builds an amazing community and an indelible bond. I, for one, am happy to be caught up in that circle here.
Many of you have been asking when our next Paleo Challenge will be. Well here it is…woohoo!
It will begin June 13th & 14 th and end July 25th & 26th. It will be a total of 6 weeks.
Cost will remain the same..$40. You must submit your $40 before the challenge. The money will then be put into a pot and the winner of the challenge will receive the pot. The last Paleo Challenge winner won $600.
I will pick the winner based on total loss of body fat, weight loss and overall appearance.
There will be a 30 minute meeting that all individuals will have to attend on either June 13th or 14th. Here we will go over the rules of the competition, what you can and can not eat, recipes, menu’s, etc.. There will be before photos that will be taken on this day.
Our last Paleo Challenge was extremely succesful. The winner, John, lost 31 lbs in 6 weeks and won $600. There were many other individuals who lost 25, 21, 19, 13, 12lbs etc..Many individuals who participated in this challenge shared that they tried their hardest just to lose 5lbs and had no success for years, but were able to lose 15-20 lbs in 6 weeks. Are you up to the Challenege?
