Pregnant Women Who Can Kick Butt

Thrusters and Pregnant

Pregnant and Back Squatting with Chains

Written by: Aelah Mass

The idea that pregnant women are fragile and unable to exert themselves doesn’t stand a chance against the women featured in this post. These pregnant CrossFitters defy the old recommendations that expecting women should “take it easy.” These to-be moms are prepping their bodies for their biggest challenge yet: Childbirth. And it’s working. Not only do these women kick butt in CrossFit, but they also kick butt during labor.

When the owner of the CrossFit affiliate my wife coaches at was in labor and began pushing, her doctor told her, “Good, now take a break.” She replied, “No, doc, I got this.” And she pushed her son Gunnar out in 5 minutes. This rockstar mom readily admits that her labor and recovery were easy – and she thanks CrossFit for it.

See her and other pregnant CrossFitters in action, and learn more about CrossFitting while pregnant after the jump. Talk about strong.

Pregnant CrossFitters require scaling differently because of their changing bodies and their changing center of mass. Always check with a doctor before starting any exercise routine. All have either given birth to healthy babies or have experienced healthy pregnancies thus far. For those who are unfamiliar with CrossFit, it may appear extreme, but each of these athletes exhibits control over her movements and bodies. I recommend any and all women to find their nearest CrossFit affiliate and give it a try! It truly is a sport for everybody.

Thanks to my wife and CrossFit coach, Sara Hill Mass, for her help in explaining the CrossFit movements.

How long have you been a member at WCF? August 2010

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness?  It might be more apparent to my family and friends outside of the box since “Crossfit” always seems to creep into my conversations…but let it be known, I LOVE CROSSFIT! Crossfit has been the perfect arena for me to be mentally and physically challenged…and COMPETE!  As a former athlete, I have missed being on a team and competing for something on a daily basis – Crossfit has literally filled a void. I never really know how a WOD is going to turn out for me on any given day, but I sure am grateful to share it alongside an amazing group of people who never fail to push and encourage me. Crossfit has made me appreciate The Struggle and The Unexpected. I would like to think that I have an “I’m up for it” attitude when it comes to trying new things and Crossfit has played a big role in that!

I should also add that it is humbling! I am fully aware that there will always be a WOD that I’m unable to finish on time…athletes that are steps ahead of me…and athletes that are on my heels! Therefore, you will see my face EVERY week at Walnut Crossfit ;) !

What is your athletic background? Stanford Softball…GO CARD! ; )

Favorite WOD: TEAM WODs

Favorite Lift: Deadlifts or “Squat-Squat-Squats!”

Least Favorite WOD: 1 mile Run

Least Favorite Lift: Shoulder Press…not a fan of “strict!”

What are your proudest CrossFit achievements? My first pull-up.

Getting my Fran time under 10 min (Yes, I understand that people do it under 3 min…back off! Let me just enjoy it! Lol)

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? I would personally like to get my body above some rings…MUSCLE-UP, please!

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started? Omg…what are you still THINKING about?! Their number is 909.598.4999…set up an INTRO! (Too forward??)

Whatever reservations you may have, leave them at the door. No matter what physical shape you are in…No matter what is making you hesitate to give it a try…I guarantee that you will surprise yourself with what you will accomplish at Crossfit. Embrace the challenge because you are bound to achieve great things!

Favorite place to eat? Mom’s dinner table

Favorite cheat meal? Mom’s rigatoni

Cleaning out my Closet

Added On: 05.27.12

I was watching a friend clean out a long-neglected closet the other day. The whole afternoon was punctuated by “what’s this?”s, “why did I keep this?” and “wow! Look what I found!”. I started thinking about the “I’ll deal with this later”s that has parts of my life end up “in a closet.”

Old beliefs completely at odds with who I am. Worn out ideas that long ago served a purpose still hanging around, unquestioned. “Someday” plans that I found exciting, pushed to the back, long forgotten, collecting dust.

I love closets. They’re great places to hang onto all of the things I’m afraid to get rid of, but also not willing to deal with.

The problem with putting parts of my life in the closet is that those parts get free rein to run the show in the background. Putting things in the closet doesn’t mean they disappear, it just means I stop paying attention to them. They’ll be back.

PS- No 6am or 7pm Class this upcoming Monday due to the holiday.

How long have you been a member at WCF? 4 ½ months

How has CrossFit changed your life, lifestyle, level of fitness? The best part about CrossFit is the stress-relief. I can come in to the box after a tough day dealing with sarcastic and lazy teenagers and know I’m going to get a great workout and put aside all the negatives. I feel energetic at work and I tend to be much more positive. I also love talking about my workouts with student-athletes and sharing my gains and accomplishments. I FEEL GREAT!!!

What is your athletic background? I’m a former water polo player and swimmer. I also have competed in a few triathlons, both sprint and Olympic distances. I’m not a fan of running, but I have participated in a few 10K’s

Favorite WOD: FRAN

Favorite Lift: THRUSTER

Least Favorite WOD: Anything with a lot of running

Least Favorite Lift: Does running count as a lift? I certainly am carrying a load!

What are your proudest CrossFit achievements? Passing the Level 1 Certification Course, dropping 4:30 off my FRAN time, performing kipping pull-ups in every WOD, and being able to work out with my “primo” John Chris Castanedo

Name one goal and/or personal record you would like to accomplish through CrossFit? I would like to qualify for the CrossFit Regionals in the next 2-3 years, finish the LA triathlon in under 3 hours, and beat Patrick at least once in a WOD.

Any advice for someone thinking about trying CrossFit or someone who has just started? It’s all in the journey! I usually say to myself on days when I don’t want to exercise that, when I’m done, I won’t regret having worked out. I will regret not working out.

Favorite place to eat? California Grill in Uptown Whittier

Favorite cheat meal? Combo pizza (pepperoni, mushroom, olives, ham, and onions) from Brickhouse Pizza in Whittier (with Tapatio!)
